Traveling Science Workshop Teacher and South Shore Program Coordinator

Join Discovery Museum’s 30-year tradition of bringing hands-on STEM Traveling Science Workshops to PreK to 8th grade classrooms.

Discovery Museum is establishing a new presence on the South Shore of MA for our Traveling Science Workshops (TSW) programs, to meet growing demand in that region. This new position is a unique opportunity for an outstanding educator with entrepreneurial ambition.

Traveling Science Workshops are in-person, classroom based, materials-rich, hands-on STEM workshops covering topics from magnetism to sound to force and motion. All workshops support the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Framework.

Discovery Museum will provide curriculum and instructor training for teaching our workshops, and will manage all scheduling, school communications, program marketing, and materials procurement and shipping for this South Shore Teacher and Coordinator role.

The new South Shore instructor will teach workshops and manage kits of materials locally, receiving regular shipments of supplies in order to maintain stock and support delivery of TSW to schools in South Shore communities.

Applicants must have experience teaching children in formal or informal settings and be friendly, flexible, dynamic, and passionate about supporting children’s learning. They must also be strong communicators who are highly organized and able to juggle multiple demands at one time. A background working with diverse constituencies and an ability to speak multiple languages strongly valued.

Responsibilities:

  • Travel to schools on the South Shore to teach multiple 45- to 60-minute classroom-based workshops per day. Must have driver’s license and the use of a reliable vehicle.
  • Coordinate with the Museum’s Materials Preparation Manager to keep a set of workshop kits with both permanent and consumable materials stocked and well-maintained locally.
  • Maintain regular weekly communication with School Programs Team regarding monthly schedules, material needs, general program feedback, and specific school interactions.
  • Collaborate remotely with other TSW instructors and our School Programs Administration Team to maintain a strong learning community that promotes effective science inquiry practice and provides outstanding enrichment for schools and groups.

Schedule and Pay: This position has a flexible schedule Monday through Friday, 3 or more days per week. Pay is $48 to $60 per workshop taught plus additional $16 to $18 hourly compensation for coordinating and maintaining materials.
