Yes! It's Math! Gallery

This gallery of fun, hands-on activities uses real world, visual interpretations of math concepts to show that math is all around us, every day--and fun!

In the Yes! It's Math! Gallery you will find printed copies of our Exploration Learning Guide for parents and caregivers, a resource of prompts and suggestions to support exploration of the gallery's STEAM topic with your child. You can also review and print the Guide here in one of six language prior to your visit, and/or after your visit for ideas for post-visit activities and conversations that reinforce learning:

In This Exhibit

Set a 110-pound harmonograph table in motion and watch it swing in unique patterns. Capture the beautiful and complex motion of this compound pendulum on your own one-of-a-kind poster to take home.

Scoops

Pretend you can have 2 scoops of ice cream and there are 4 flavors to choose from. How many choices do you have? Expore combinations and permutations with this fun, creative math problem.

two children drop small balls into a wall-mounted frame that will sort them into columns

Probability Board

Send balls through a wall-sized probability board and generate a graph of stacked balls that shows the probability of different pathways.

Magna-Tiles Light Table

Explore symmetry, angles, and space filling with colorful Magna-Tile geometric shapes on a glowing light table. Use these magnetic 2D translucent pieces to create 3D structures that glow.

Geoboard

Create triangles, squares, curves, patterns, intricate shapes, and even letters when you stretch colored rubber bands on a giant pegboard that wraps around the wall.

Sand Pendulums

Create spiraling white sand patterns on grey slate when you swing funnels on pendulums. Compare the paths of the 1 and 2-point sand pendulums to one another and to the Harmonograph, a giant 4-point pendulum.

Math Dance

Dance along with Mickela Mallozi, the Emmy® Award-winning host of the PBS show Bare Feet, which explores traditional cultures around the world through dance. Move to the music along with Mickela and recreate the patterns and shapes in dance in this one-of-a-kind exhibit.
