Visitor Services Volunteer (Adult*)

Discovery Museum's Visitor Services Volunteer position is ideal for adults looking for an opportunity to work with children in a fun, fast-paced environment, while giving back to the local community! This is a public-facing position, with volunteers working directly with our child visitors and their caregivers. We look for volunteers who are outgoing and personable, enjoy working with children, work well with a team, are flexible and adaptable, and demonstrate attention to detail. A background in science, education, and/or child development is a bonus, but is not required.

    • Positive body language
    • A courteous, respectful, and positive attitude
    • Clean and safe exhibit spaces that are ready for the next visitor to experience
    • PLAY! Know the exhibits and be ready to share that knowledge with visitors (ie. Fun tricks to try, how exhibits work, etc)
  • Show initiative by stocking, tidying, resetting, suggesting ways to improve the visitor experience, and anticipating visitors’ and colleagues’ needs
  • Attend all mandatory volunteer meetings and trainings

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be able to stand for four hours at a time both indoors and outdoors, regularly ascend/descend stairs, lift up to 25 pounds, and be comfortable stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Frequent movement throughout and across the Discovery Museum campus is required, including during inclement or extreme weather and over uneven terrain.
  • Work environment often has moderate to loud noise for sustained periods of time.

This volunteer position asks for a commitment of a minimum of one approximately 4-hour shift (morning or afternoon) per week. We are currently most interested in applicants with Wednesday morning availability.
